Snow avalanches are the greatest source of danger for mountain travelers in winter. Only by recognizing risk can you use your knowledge and experience to reduce that risk to an acceptable level.
All our courses follow the guidelines established by the American Avalanche Association (AAA) and are offered in conjunction with the National Ski Patrol, (NSP) All our instructors have attended the National Avalanche School, AAI Pro 1, AIARE Instructor Trainings and have experience in avalanche terrain. Information is shared freely among the wide network of instructors in the NSP, AIARE and AAA, thus providing up-to-date and comprehensive training programs.
Level I Mod I Avalanche; This one day course consists of the classroom and pre-study work for the complete Level I Avalanche course. We do not need avalanche terrain to teach this course so we can offer this pre-season so you can complete the field portions of the L1 course during the ski season at our courses in the Adirondacks, Smuggles Notch, VT or Mt. Washington, NH.
Level I Avalanche; This three-day course teaches students how terrain, weather and snowpack contribute to avalanche hazzards. The course covers movement through avalanche terrain, route selection/hazard identification and stability assessments in the field environments. It also focuses on decision making and the fundamentals of self, group, and organized rescue. Eight to ten hours of pre-course work are required for this course.
Mountain and Avalanche Awareness; This course is for general information and for any mountain enthusiasts. Participants learn the basics of mountain awareness and the principal contributing factors to avalanches. This course is recommended for snowmobilers and the public, looking for an introduction the avalanche hazard, and how this affects them in the winter environment. *This course is not a prerequisite for the Level I Avalanche.
